Ten Tenets for Players
Here are ten great tenets of old-school DnD compiled by Patrick Stuart from posts by Gregory Blair, Brian Harbron, FM Geist, Zedeck Siew, Brian Murphy, Dirk Detweiler Leichty and Daniel Davis to a G+ thread (archive) started by Scrap Princess.
- This is a game about interacting with this world as if it were a place that exists.
- Killing things is not the goal.
- There is nothing that is “supposed” to happen.
- Unknowability and consequence make everything interesting.
- You play as your character, not as the screenwriter writing your character.
- It’s your job to make your character interesting and to make the game interesting for you.
- If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
- The answer is not on your character sheet.
- Things are swingy.
- You will die.
Note: I’ve posted this here because I keep looking for it and having to hunt down the G+ post. I don’t think that Patrick has posted it anywhere on the web, but if he has let me know, I can link to it rather than hosting here.
